Magic: The Gathering: is "putting cards in your graveyard" the same as discarding?

when the ability of a card says "Landfall- when you play a land, your opponent puts the top three cards of his or her library in their graveyard" does that count as discarding? I was just wondering if Hedron Crab and Psychosis Crawler would be good together.
