Why does my jaw crack?

Whenever I open my mouth my jaw cracks. When it first started, it didn't hurt at all, but now it hurts so bad! It also cracks when I move my jaw left and right. It happens mostly on the right side. I used to have braces but now I have retainers. Is this just my wisdom teeth coming in or is there something wrong with my jaw?
